‘My Head is Too Full’

Place2Be works with 257 schools reaching a population of 105,000 children to help them cope with wide-range and complex social issues including bullying, bereavement, domestic violence, breakdown and trauma. It's been so interesting to see the organisation grow over the past couple of years; below two year 5 pupils share what having Place2be in their school means

Matthew Williamson》

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE'S OPENING SPEECH AT THE PLACE2BE HEADTEACHER CONFERENCE

18TH NOVEMBER 2015

Thank you Catherine for that kind introduction. I was delighted when I was asked to help open today's conference.

I want to start by saying a big thank you to all of the head teachers here today. I know how much is asked of you.

The fact that you are all committing your valuable time to support Place2Be, and prioritise the mental health of your students is something that all parents should be grateful for.
I often get asked why I decided to spend time highlighting the mental health of children. I imagine my answer might be similar to many of yours.

I know that I was lucky. My parents and teachers provided me with a wonderful and secure childhood where I always knew I was loved, valued and listened to.

But of course many children are not so lucky. Since beginning my work in areas like addiction, for example, I have seen time and time again that the roots of poor mental health in adulthood are almost always present in unresolved childhood challenges.

I am sure you will agree that all children deserve time, attention and love from the adults in their lives. These basic qualities are so much more valuable than the always changing material and social concerns that can seem so important to young people.

As today's theme reminds us, many children – even those from stable, happy homes – are finding that their heads are just too full. It is our duty, as parents and as teachers, to give all children the space to build their emotional strength and provide a strong foundation for their future.

Of course, not all children have the anchor of a strong family. Many will arrive through your school gates feeling a real lack of love and devotion in their lives. This often leaves them feeling insecure and without confidence and trust in the world around them. That is why your work is so important.

Parents, teachers and other school staff need the tools to help these young people early in their lives. And the earlier, the better. It is proven that early action prevents problems later in life.

Imagine if everyone was able to help just one child who needs to be listened to, needs to be respected, and needs to be loved – we could make such a huge difference for an entire generation.

As head teachers you have the chance to reach tens of thousands of children during your careers, and make an impact on a great scale. Thank you for making the work of Place2Be part of your mission. I hope you know how much your work is valued.
Thank you – I am really looking forward to the rest of the afternoon.

King George 6

The King wrote a beautiful letter to his eldest child the Queen – who at the time was still Princess Elizabeth – in 1947 and sent it shortly after her wedding

"I was so proud and thrilled at having you so close to me on our long walk in Westminster Abbey," wrote the late King. "But when I handed your hand to the Archbishop, I felt I had lost something very precious.

"You were so calm and composed during the service and said your words with such conviction that I knew everything was alright.

"I have watched you grow up all these years with pride under the skilful direction of Mummy, who, as you know, is the most marvellous person in the world in my eyes, and I can, I know, always count on you and now Philip to help us in our work.

"Your leaving us has left a great blank in our lives. But do remember that your old home is still yours and do come back to it as much and as often as possible.

"I can see that you are sublimely happy with Philip which is right but don't forget us, is the wish of your ever loving and devoted... Papa."

68 years ago today, on November 20, 1947, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip married at Westminster Abbey in London. Happy Anniversary to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh!

The Queen's wedding dress was designed by Norman Hartnell and was embroidered with hundreds of seed-pearls and tiny beads - http://bit.ly/1jaLlPL

"With her bridal dress and tiara on her wedding day, she was a knockout,..........." "It showed how people wanted to be involved,” she said.........She added, "Tulle could easily be acquired, whereas duchess satin was so difficult to get in those days......
And just like Will and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge, a young, pretty Princess Elizabeth and a tall, handsome Prince Philip brought smiles and celebrations to the nation – something that was certainly needed in November 1947, just two years after the end of WWII.

She was just 21 years old at the time, and her soon-to-be husband, Prince Philip Mountbatten of Greece, was 26
